Politics has never been more unpredictable. Radical populists and insurgents have turned politics-as-usual on its head. Rebel explores how we got here, where we are heading and what we can do about it.

Douglas Carswell argues that these insurgencies are a reaction against the emergence of a political and economic oligarchy that has subverted our democracy and stifled our market system. 'Politics,' he writes, 'is a cartel. Like the economy, it is rigged in the interests of a few.' This leaves our liberal, democratic order – the mechanism that has allowed a historically unprecedented proportion of humanity to flourish – facing a twin assault oligarchs on the one hand, radical populists on the other.

Reassessing history and politics, Rebel puts forward a bold new thesis we are not the first to face such a threat. Oligarchic cartels have clogged the arteries of nations and economies throughout history, triggering radical insurgencies in protest. But all too often the radicals have strengthened the hand of the oligarchs the Roman, Venetian and Dutch republics all succumbed to cartels. 'Anti-oligarch radicals,' the author notes, 'have often made the oligarchs seem the more attractive option.' So, too, today, he suggests.

In the face of these twin threats, Carswell mounts a robust defence of the liberal, democratic order. Drawing on his first-hand experience in taking on – and beating – the established political parties, he proposes a profound reform of politics and capitalism to free us from the cartels, listing the practical steps needed to make this revolutionary change happen.

Rebel How to Overthrow the Emerging Oligarchy eBook Douglas Carswell Reviews

A wonderful book. An easy read that puts today's political developments in a historical context. Douglas understands that many of us are sick of the current status quo but warns that history is full of charlatans with a grand plan (Trump, etc). This could easily have become a pessimistic critique of the current state of affairs and society's worrying direction; however, it is surprisingly uplifting with some interesting proposals for how we can improve the system.
Once I read the introduction and saw that the author was pushing the leftist media lies about Donald Trump such as the distortions on his statements about Mexican illegals, I figured this dude is a UK shill who doesn’t really understand our political system and who is really corrupting it.

The other thing that turned me off was his intent to push Democracy as a political model. A form of government pointedly avoided by the framers because it always descends into a mobocracy that rules the minority view with majority opinion.

We were crafted as a representative Constitutional Republic for a reason not as a Democracy which is pushed in the Communist Manifesto as the first step towards Communism. Think I’ll skip this one which Steve Hilton was pushing on his show, The Next Revolution. Makes me wonder about him as well.
The "rating" at 3 stars is for American readers, since the author goes over grounds of U S experience that have been well (perhaps better) covered by others. Of greater value are his discourses on the failures of "elites," and some clues into the compositions of true elites (vis-à-vis wanna'be-s). It is well worth a read for a view of today's oligarchies in politics and governments.
Carswell offers some fresh ideas worth thinking about critically. It's a benefit that they come from a political insider. Unfortunately, there are too many gaps and inconsistencies to accept his proposals as offering plausible solutions. The most substantial problem seems that he, too, is not yet ready to speak out that all of us are both parasites and hosts to parasites - we are all equals, and none is special in this, also not the 'elite'. Ultimately, this is the truth each and everyone of us needs to deal with to attain true liberty. Perhaps Carswell believes that we, the demos, aren't yet mature enough that he could dare to tell us that.
Perspective on how, and why, our politicians and media avoid our nation's most serious problems.
Well written and cogently argued case against elites and their propensity to "rig the system" for their benefit..
Great summary of how western democracies got to this point.
